Superficial veins.

The major superficial veins of the upper limbs are the cephalic and basilic veins located in the subcutaneous tissue.

Basilic vein.

  • The basilic vein arises from the dorsal venous network of the hand.
  • It ascends the medial aspect of the upper limb.
  • At the lower border of the teres major muscle it combines with the brachial veins, forming the axillary vein.

Cephalic vein.

  • The cephalic vein arises from the dorsal venous network of the hand. (like the basilic vein)
  • It ascends the anterior lateral aspect of the upper limb.
  • Passes between the deltoid and pectoralis major muscle and empties into axillary vein.

(the two veins are connected by the median cubital vein at the elbow.)

Deep veins.

The deep venous system is in the deep fascia and is composed of veins that accompany the arteries of the upper limb and take their names.
